LOCAL NEWS:Local Democrats Invited to Brainstorming Session on Sun., Jan. 31Tuesday, 26 January 2010
Just because longtime city Democratic clubs have disbanded doesn't mean their members have lost interest in politics. The Mount Royal Democratic Club's founders declared the closure of the Club this past December, after 55 years. That has not dimmed the interest of the former club members. The vote last week in Massachusetts for the Senate seat that was formerly held for 47 years by Ted Kennedy shows that political presence and popularity cannot be taken for granted. Despite the strength of Maryland’s Democratic Party, existing candidates require financial and manpower support and new candidates constantly need to be pursued. Baltimore’s passionate and progressive activists who represent their Party’s ideals are needed to both become and recruit political candidates. Leaders from the Mount Royal Democratic Club and the former New Democratic Club invite other Baltimore clubs’ members and local political activists to join an open, informal discussion about what might be the new model for City-wide or local political activism. Those who are interested in joining the conversation are invited to a brainstorming session at Alonso’s Restaurant, 415 West Cold Spring Lane, on Sun., Jan. 31 at 3 p.m.upstairs on Sunday at 3pm. The event will be held in a meeting room upstairs. The organizers of this meeting are seeking to learn from the examples active and successful Democratic clubs in other cities, such as New York’s Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century (“DL21C”) www.dl21c.org, Manhattan Young Democrats http://gomyd.com, and New York State Democratic Committee www.nydems.org. These clubs use topical networking sessions to keep discussions and recruitment alive. Also being studied are Philadelphia’s Liberty City Democratic Club http://www.libertycity.org/ and Chicago’s Cook County Democrats http://www.cookcountydems.com. The public is welcome to this free event. For more information, contact Kim Forsyth at kpforsyth@aol.com or Al Barry at ababalt@yahoo.com. For more information about Democrat-related organizations in the Baltimore metro area, visit this site. For Republican organizations, visit here or here. Another political group active in the area is the Baltimore Green Party. Efforts are under way to establish a local Progressive Party Meet-up Group. Copyright © 2010 The Baltimore News Network.
