NEW REPORT:

Religious and Advocacy Organizations Establish ‘Global Benchmarks’ for Corporations Worldwide

Special to The Chronicle & Sentinel

After ten years of collaboration, The Globalizing the Principles Network (GNP) has released a report, engendered by concerns from its member organizations, that details the expectations the group has for corporations and their social resposibility. Among the concerns discussed are sweatshop labor, pollution control and access to affordable pharmaceuticals, including HIV/AIDS medications.

Members of the GNP, which include the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility of the United Kingdom, the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility in the United States and the Taskforce on the Churches and Corporate Responsibility of Canada (now KAIROS-Canada), look to establish “global benchmarks” for corporations, which are:

—a human rights policy based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

—workers' rights to organize a union and bargain collectively and other labor rights defined by the International Labor Organization

—a new relationship between corporations, communities and ecosystems; preservation and protection of the environment for present and future generations

—commitment to the principle that every worker has the right of access to health care, accessible and affordable medicines, including antiretrovirals for the treatment of AIDS.
