The Sentinel - Who we are

Why Is There A Sentinel?

IN 1989, Baltimore News Network, Inc. (BNN), a nonprofit corporation, was established by a group of concerned citizens who believe that the mainstream media offer a narrow perspective of the news. Too frequently these news sources ignore or trivialize progressive or alternative viewpoints. BNN’s goals include fostering public information exchange through various means, such as book and film discussion groups, informal dinners offering a chance to meet important leaders, operating BNN Books (at 10 West 25th Street) as an outlet for information, and by publishing The Sentinel.
The Sentinel is independent from the Chronicle, in which it is inserted each month. Because the Sentinel is a nonprofit endeavor, it is able to obtain permission to reprint articles that would otherwise not likely be seen by most Baltimoreans.
As some readers may know, when articles are syndicated, the holder of the syndication rights in a given community has the sole discretion as to whether or not to publish a syndicated article. Oftentimes, worthy stories are not reprinted by those who hold the syndication rights. Many of these syndicated sources definitely do want the public to know of their work, but cannot allow reprint rights to for-profit corporations like the publisher of the Chronicle. The Sentinel, however, because of its nonprofit status, can be permitted to reprint the articles in question, thereby performing a valuable service to the public.
Because its pages are not taken up with advertising, the Sentinel is able to give generous space to columnists and writers. Instead of advertising dollars, the Sentinel depends on contributions from you, the public, in order to meet its modest costs. Please see page three for more information about membership in Baltimore News Network, Inc. Thank you for your encouragement and support.
