Not a tax increase: the US advised Ukraine on how to increase profits

It is proposed to focus not on raising taxes, but on customs reform and the fight against “gray” markets.

The US encourages the Ukrainian government to increase revenues primarily by reforming customs and fighting “gray” markets, and not by raising taxes.

US Special Representative for Economic Recovery of Ukraine Penny Pritzker said this at a briefing in Kyiv, Ukrinform reports.

In response to journalists' questions, Pritzker said it was up to the Ukrainian government to decide where to get the revenue. And she, along with U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink, suggested focusing not on raising taxes, but on customs reform and the fight against “gray” markets.

“You have revenue that you are not receiving, and that you should be receiving today. Let's focus on that first,” the U.S. special representative said.

She noted that proposed reform of Ukrainian customs through digitalization. This would prevent any corruption.

“There is also a huge source of profit in the 'gray' markets of cigarettes, alcohol or electronics that can be sold on a larger market. And that is why we encouraged the Ukrainian government to focus on this first,” Pritzker explained.

Recall that in June, the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance and Tax Policy, Danylo Hetmantsev, announced that the parliament would soon consider the possibility of raising taxes, including the military tax. Proposals from the government are expected, and they will be “quite radical.”
