 In Ukraine, every third sole proprietorship closes in the first year of operation

The largest number of sole proprietors closed in Kyiv – 13%, Kharkiv – 8% and Dnipropetrovsk – 8% regions.

Almost 194 thousand new Sole proprietors were opened by Ukrainians in the first eight months of 2024. During the same period, just over 120 thousand sole proprietors closed. More than a third of new cases are closed in the first year of work.

This was reported by the press service of “Opendatabot” with reference to data from the Unified State Register (USR).

It is noted that 193,192 new sole proprietors have been registered since the beginning of the year. This is even more than before the start of the full-scale war, when 186,144 new cases were opened during the same period.

More new cases were opened by entrepreneurs in the capital – 26,303 or 13.6% of the total number of new sole proprietors this year. New businesses are actively registered in Dnipropetrovsk region (18,025), Lviv region (14,459), Kyiv region (14,428) and Kharkiv region (12,954).

A third of new businesses are opened in the trade sector, and the IT sector attracts 7.6% of new entrepreneurs. The top three most popular areas for new businesses is the provision of individual services (7%). At the same time, if in 2023 cafes and restaurants were among the leaders, then this year they were supplanted by the provision of information services.

Opendatabot also noted that the share of women among newly minted businessmen was a record – 60%. For comparison, in 2023 this figure was 55.6%, and in the first year of full-scale – 47%.

“Currently, the number of new cases is 1.6 times greater than the number of closed ones. Thus, 120,154 sole proprietors have closed in Ukraine since the beginning of the year. Newly created enterprises suffered the most: 24.5% of those opened last year closed, and 13.7% of those opened this year.

The largest number of sole proprietors closed in Kyiv – 13% (15,770), Kharkiv – 8% (10,097) and Dnipropetrovsk – 8% (9,931) regions.
