Potato prices have increased by almost 150% in a year: prices may jump even more

In particular, MP Dmytro Solomchuk warned that potato prices may rise significantly in the spring of 2025.

Potato prices are growing rapidly in Ukraine. For example, the cost of the vegetable at the largest wholesale agricultural market in western Ukraine, “Shuvar” in Lviv, is 17.3 UAH/kg. This is 147% more than the price last year, which at this time was 7 UAH/kg.

This was reported by the head of the marketing department of the wholesale agricultural market “Shuvar” Tatyana Popovich, AgroPortal.ua reports.

According to her, there is a possibility that in the coming month, potato prices may rise due to increased demand against the background of a decrease in the supply of early potatoes and the transition to harvesting late varieties.

“Among the main factors that may affect the rise in price are weather conditions (especially in the case of prolonged rains during harvesting), as well as an increase in energy and logistics costs,” Tatyana Popovich predicts.

People's Deputy Dmytro Solomchuk warned that potato prices could rise significantly in the spring of 2025.

According to him, due to the lack of quality seed material, as well as weather conditions and the rise in prices for plant protection products, farmers received a poor-quality harvest.

“Unfortunately, the largest percentage of potatoes are infected, many are small and deformed. But good for salein retail chains, as well as for storing in professional vegetable storage facilities – a tiny amount, it almost doesn't exist,” the MP says.

According to his forecasts, given the shortage of professional long-term vegetable storage facilities in Ukraine, energy problems, and an insufficient amount of commercial potatoes, potato prices will rise.

“Most likely, in the spring, Ukrainians will be able to buy quality potatoes for at least UAH 25 per kg at best,” MP Solomchuk suggested.

The fact that the potatoes this year are not of very high quality is also confirmed by Volyn farmer Grigory in a comment to Suspilne Lutsk.

“This is just the beginning of the price… There are a lot of worms in the potatoes this year, so the price will also go up because of this. The potatoes have grown, and it (the worm – Ed.) is called a wireworm. They buy a lot: 5-7 nets. For the winter already – if they don't prepare today, tomorrow the price will be higher. Last year it was 10, 9, 8 hryvnia,” the farmer said.

Earlier it was reported that the price of carrots in Ukraine had sharply increased.
