Potato prices are climbing.
Potato prices in Ukraine are setting new records. One of the reasons for the price increase was the decrease in potato yields due to unfavorable weather conditions this summer.
This was reported by analysts of the EastFruit project.
According to farmers, due to the drought observed in the main potato-producing regions, the percentage of substandard products that cannot be stored for a long time is very high.
Thus, as of October 8, potatoes were sold at 17-25 UAH/kg ($0.41-0.61/kg). Over the past week alone, the price of this product in Ukraine has increased by an average of 19%.
“The reason for the price increase in this segment is still the increased demand from wholesale companies, which continue to purchase this product for storage. At the same time, in some regions, due to heavy rains, potato harvesting has been somewhat difficult, which additionally supports the growth of prices for this product,” the analysts explained.
It is worth noting that at present, the price of potatoes in Ukraine is already on average 2.8 times higher than for the same period in 2023. But large market players are in no hurry to sell the bulk of potatoes. They expect higher prices in this segment in the first half of this season.
Recall that the day before, the NBU reported that in the coming months, further acceleration of inflation is expected due to an increase in business costs for wages and electricity, an increase in excise taxes and the effects of the transfer of the hryvnia devaluation.
And experts reported that food prices will rise in Ukraine in the near future. Read more about this in the news.
