Maximum price in seven years: a popular vegetable has become more expensive in Ukraine

Tomato prices are creeping up.

Greenhouse plants in Ukraine are increasing prices for tomatoes. One of the reasons was a significant decrease in the supply of greenhouse vegetables on the market, the demand for which remains quite stable.

This was reported by analysts of the EastFruit project.

Producers noted that the selection of tomatoes in greenhouse complexes has decreased due to cool weather and average daily air temperature, which is gradually decreasing.

Thus, on October 11, greenhouse tomatoes went on sale at 55-65 UAH/kg ($1.33-1.58/kg), depending on the quality and volume of the offered lot. This is on average 10% more expensive than at the end of the last working week.

Experts emphasized that the new prices in this market segment remain the highest in at least the last seven years of monitoring.

According to sellers, the reason for this situation is the limited supply of tomatoes on the market.

“Most small producers have now almost completed sales and offer tomatoes only in small wholesale quantities, while the quality of such products is often low. At the same time, harvests in stationary greenhouses also remain small in volume, so factories also sell products in small batches,” the report says.

Analysts added that currently, greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine are already on average 22% more expensive than in the same period in 2023. Many producers announced their intention to make further attempts to raise prices in this segment next week, since even after the increase in price, the demand for tomatoes remains quite high.

Earlier it was reported that in Ukraine, the growth of prices for food products may accelerate in September-October. In particular, vegetables and dairy products may become more expensive.
