In Ukraine, losses of harvested fruits and vegetables can reach 60%: what are the reasons

Total losses of the agricultural sector exceed $80 billion.

Ukraine has very high rates of post-harvest losses of fruit and vegetable products, which can reach 40-60%.

This is stated in the review of the fresh fruit and vegetable market in the EU and Ukraine on the website of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

The reason for this is the lack of equipped storage facilities.

High post-harvest losses are one of the weaknesses of the Ukrainian fresh vegetable sector and fruits.

“The development of this sector can become a powerful tool for economic recovery and rural development,” the report says.

But it is hampered by a low level of mechanization compared to the EU, a lack of storage facilities, the absence of the necessary certificates for export to the EU in small and medium-sized farms, and limited access to sales markets.

Additional problems were created by full-scale aggression from Russia, which destroyed a third of fresh water reserves in Ukraine. Large areas are mined, especially in regions where vegetables were traditionally grown.

The total losses of the agricultural sector exceed $80 billion, which is almost equal to the average annual GDP of Ukraine for 2011-2021 ($102 billion).

Earlier it was reported that food prices in Ukraine will rise as early as November. Read more about this in the news.
