Garlic prices are breaking records. Analysts have named the reason.
The cost of garlic in Ukraine has reached record levels, and it will not be cheaper.
This is reported in EastFruit.
It is noted that Ukraine does not have sufficient garlic reserves, and prices for this product in Europe are 1.5 times higher. Since mid-December 2024, the cost of garlic has confidently crossed the mark of 200 hryvnia per kilogram.
“In hryvnia, this is an absolute record. Even during the pandemic, this vegetable was cheaper, because before the war it was grown in some places on large fields,” the analysts emphasized.
Several factors have led to the rise in the price of garlic. Firstly, demand for it has grown in European countries, due to the arrival of new immigrants, at home where garlic is an important ingredient of national cuisine. Now in Germany and Austria its cost is on average about 6 euros, although you can find it for an exorbitant almost 20 euros.
Another factor is that there is not enough garlic for everyone, that is, supply does not meet demand. The main producer of this product in the EU is Spain.
“This year, Spanish garlic producers have completely exhausted their reserves, which has not happened in the last three years. This happened due to weather conditions, the rise in the cost of hired labor and transport. Now even alternative suppliers (from South America) have exhausted their reserves, which allows prices to rise until the new season,” said Danny Dean, a representative of the Dutch company Denimpex.
He said that European suppliers have already exhausted their quotas for importing Chinese garlic, so now they are importing it with fines of 1,200 euros per ton. This increases the price, but people still buy it.
Recall that in Ukraine, prices for oranges and tangerines have increased.
