Ukrainian farmers partially stop growing garlic due to the war and losses in the industry.
Ukraine covers only 30% of its needs for garlic and cannot fully provide itself with this vegetable.
This was reported by the EastFruit publication.
With the systematic development of the industry and the construction of storage facilities for garlic, Ukraine can achieve a higher level of provision with this vegetable.
The President of the Association of Garlic Producers of Ukraine and a representative of the Dutch Gourmet company Yulianna Mussa spoke about the situation in the industry.
She noted that the area under garlic in Ukraine has decreased due to the occupation of the territories of the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, and now the crop occupies 1000-1500 hectares. However, it is difficult to accurately calculate the area, because many small farms grow garlic without registration.
“The storage problem remains acute, there is a need for high-quality storage facilities. Unfortunately, Ukraine does not yet have the required number of professional storage facilities,” she believes.
According to her, many Ukrainian farmers are abandoning garlic cultivation due to losses, lack of proper knowledge on its cultivation and problems with finding a market for the product.
Recall that prices for one of the most popular vegetables in Ukraine have begun to decline. Consumers are waiting for new price trends.
