Will Ukraine change its main currency from dollar to euro: NBU responded

It is known that settlements in euros are gradually increasing.

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) is considering the possibility of changing the main exchange rate currency from the dollar to the euro, but there is no decision yet.

This was stated by the head of the NBU, Andriy Pyshnyy.

According to him, the regulator is approaching this issue in a comprehensive manner, analyzing all possible options.

“To say that the issue of re-linking is at the exit is a no-no,” Pyshny said.

Deputy Head of the NBU Yuriy Heletiy noted that settlements in euros are gradually growing: they account for 50% of imports, 30% of exports, and 22-23% on the cash market.

“Further expansion of the euro's share may actualize this discussion. It will certainly be comprehensive and quite broad. We must especially take into account that this issue may become more relevant in the context of our European integration,” added the deputy head of the NBU.

Pyshny also noted that the NBU does not plan to change the structure of international reserves, most of which are denominated in dollars. Answering a question about a hypothetical freeze of Ukraine's reserves by the US to force Kyiv to peace, he said:

“We do not see such a development of events. The United States has been and remains our strategic partner.”

Let us recall that the National Bank explained how they want to curb inflation.
