Egypt Strengthens Role as Key Buyer of Ukrainian Wheat

Between July and May of the 2024/25 marketing year (from July 1 to May 31), Ukraine exported 1.9 million tons of wheat to Egypt, marking a 19% increase compared to the same period last season, when shipments reached 1.6 million tons. Egypt’s share of total Ukrainian wheat exports also rose from 10% to 13%, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to analytical agency ASAP Agri.

The agency noted that nearly 200,000 tons of wheat were shipped to Egypt between June 1 and June 22. As a result, total wheat exports to Egypt by the end of the 2024/25 marketing year are expected to surpass 2.1 million tons, significantly exceeding the 1.7 million tons delivered in the full 2023/24 season.

These volumes secure Egypt’s position as the second-largest importer of Ukrainian wheat, according to ASAP Agri. As of June 20, demand prices for new-crop Ukrainian milling wheat with 11.5% protein content stood at $235 per ton CIF Egypt. By comparison, deals during the same period last year were made at around $232 per ton.

According to Ukraine’s updated export strategy, the country plans to expand into new markets following the loss of trade visa-free access to the EU. The 2025 agenda includes entering 31 new markets, notably in Africa, the Middle East, and China.

Since the beginning of the 2024/25 marketing year, Ukraine has exported 40.04 million tons of grain and leguminous crops. Of this amount, 1.67 million tons were shipped in June alone.

The leading importers of Ukrainian agricultural products remain Spain — $2.7 billion, the Netherlands — $1.6 billion, Italy — $1.3 billion, and Germany — $1.2 billion.

In 2024, Ukraine’s total agricultural exports amounted to $24.5 billion, making up 59% of the country’s overall exports. This figure was only higher in 2021, when it reached $27.7 billion.

Sunflower oil accounted for the largest share of last year’s agricultural exports — 21%, with nearly 6 million tons exported for a total of $5.1 billion. Corn ranked second, also at 21%, with 29.6 million tons exported worth $5 billion. Wheat was the third-largest category, comprising 15% of agro-exports — 20.6 million tons with a total value of $3.7 billion.
