What changes can Ukrainians expect in Ireland

Since the beginning of 2024, Ireland has been making significant changes to payments and living conditions for Ukrainian refugees. In December, the government announced a significant reduction in assistance for those with public housing, reducing from 220 euros to 38.80 euros per week.

After Ukrainians leave public housing and start renting their own housing, they will be able to apply for the full amount of social assistance.

It was also decided that free housing from the state will be available to Ukrainians only for a period of up to 90 days.

These changes will come into force on January 29 and will not affect Ukrainians who have already received temporary protection in Ireland earlier.

Remember

During the period from November 1 to December 20, 2023, 3,740 Ukrainians arrived in the country and asked for temporary protection. During this time, average weekly arrivals ranged from 484 to 702.

The number of Ukrainian refugee arrivals in Ireland remains stable, ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 monthly during 2023. Currently, 102,339 citizens of Ukraine have received temporary protection.

The Irish government began to express outrage about the housing crisis in the fall of 2022 due to the increase in the number of refugees, which resulted in a shortage of places for their resettlement.

Therefore, the authorities have developed a mechanism for reducing support for migrants from Ukraine in order to reduce the attractiveness of the country for new refugees, but the situation has hardly changed.
