Hungarian farmers announced a protest on the border with Ukraine

Hungarian farmers announced an action at the Zahony-Chop border checkpoint. They are against the European Commission’s proposal to extend the duty-free regime for exports from Ukraine for a year. This was reported by the Association of Hungarian Farmer Associations and Cooperatives Magosz.

What is known

“GMO products of uncontrolled quality, treated with banned chemicals, could threaten not only consumers, but also EU agriculture,” Hungarian farmers believe and declare their intention “Take measures against this with all available means.”

The demonstration of farmers at the border checkpoint “Zahony – Chop” is scheduled for 11:00 on February 9.

On the same day, start a nationwide strike and a blockade of the border with Ukraine, farmers in Poland gather. They are also outraged that the EU intends to extend the duty-free regime for agricultural products from Ukraine until mid-2025.

It is expected that it will not be as liberal as the previous two years, and will take into account the demands of EU farmers and other stakeholders persons.

The new autonomous trade measures effectively introduce quotas on the most sensitive products: poultry, eggs and sugar. If imports of these products exceed the average annual import volumes for 2022 and 2023, duties will be imposed on them.

The European Commission's proposal has yet to be considered by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.
