“We strongly disagree with the CNIL’s findings, which are factually incorrect, and we have filed an appeal with the Council of State,” Amazon said.

In January The CNIL fined Amazon France Logistique, which operates large Amazon trains in France, for what the regulator called an “overly intrusive” surveillance system.

CNIL investigation

The French regulator found that warehouses Amazon operated a three-notice system to monitor worker activity. It was this that the regulator declared illegal.

It is noted that one notification was triggered if the product was scanned too quickly or less than 1.25 seconds after scanning the previous one, which increased the risk of an error. Another signaled breaks of 10 minutes or more, and a third tracked breaks of 1 to 10 minutes.

In addition, CNIL also questioned why Amazon needed to store workers' data for 31 days.
