The release will focus on updated versions of the iPad Pro and iPad Air, sources said. Pro models will get new, sharper OLED displays, while the iPad Air will get a 12.9-inch screen option for the first time.
The move marks the end of the longest period of no new models in the history of the iPad, which was first introduced by Steve Jobs in 2010.
About 18 months have passed since the last updates. Apple is betting that new models with faster processors and updated accessories could help revive the tablet category.
The iPad Pro models, codenamed J717, J718, J720 and J721, will be powered by a new M3 chip and updated versions Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil
Apple had planned to release the new iPads before the end of March or early April, but the company is working to finalize the software for the devices. The latest model screens also require complex new manufacturing techniques, which has led to the delay.
