Ukrainians can stay in Germany with an invalid passport

The provision or extension of temporary residence permits in Germany to Ukrainian refugees does not require them to have a valid passport. This was stated by a representative of the Berlin Senate, that is, the government of Berlin, which has the status of one of the 16 federal states of Germany, in response to a request from Deutsche Welle.

According to him , the right to stay in the country and all related opportunities remain in force regardless of the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to temporarily suspend the provision of consular services for Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 years who are abroad.

In addition, If the Ukrainian embassy or consulate refuses to issue or renew a passport to a Ukrainian citizen solely on the basis of his failure to serve in the army, then the Berlin Land Office for Foreigners (Landesamt für Einwanderung) can issue him a travel document for traveling abroad, which replaces the passport.< /p>

However, the Senate representative adds, this will only be done in exceptional cases, since the rules for the stay of foreigners in Germany allow immigration departments to issue German documents replacing documents to people of military age if they can prove there are compelling reasons for traveling. Military duty in itself is considered a completely acceptable civil duty in Germany.

“Corresponding paid applications for a German travel document will be carefully checked and, as a rule, rejected,” the Senate representative frankly warns.
