Turned social network X into a haven for disinformation and illegal content: the EU brought charges against Elon Musk

The EU accuses the social network X (formerly Twitter) and its owner Elon Musk of turning the platform into a platform for disinformation and the dissemination of illegal content. Politico writes about this. X became the first platform against which charges were brought under the new EU law on social media.

The platform may face a huge fine of several million euros – up to 6 percent of X's total income.

The Commission said that Musk allowed the purchase of account verification, indicating them with a blue “checkmark”, supposedly emphasizing the reliability of the source of information.

“Because anyone can sign up to receive such a verified status, this negatively affects users’ ability to make free and informed decisions on the authenticity of accounts and the content with which they interact,” regulators in Brussels said.
