“It won't be possible to hide assets”: NAPC warns officials against cryptocurrency fraud

The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption has identified instances of public servants falsely declaring information about cryptocurrency. Law enforcement officers have already initiated criminal proceedings against them, the NAPC press service reported.

“The available technical and analytical tools […] during full checks make it possible to check the presence of cryptocurrency or find out whether it really belongs to the person indicated in the declaration,” the statement says.

NAPC found out that the deputy head of the regional service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Mykolaiv region indicated bitcoins worth UAH 100 million in hryvnia equivalent in his declaration for 2021. He was unable to confirm the presence of cryptocurrency during a full check.

And in his declaration for 2022, NAPC found false information about cryptocurrency worth more than UAH 48 million.

NAPC found false information worth more than UAH 23 million in the declaration for 2022 of an employee of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor's Office.

Only regarding cryptocurrency, the employee indicated false information worth UAH 22.5 million, including about the presence, quantity and cost of his numerous digital assets, “and forgot to mention some at all.”

In his declaration for 2021, a deputy of the Vinnytsia City Council indicated that a member of his family had 20 bitcoins worth more than UAH 2 million and DOTs worth almost UAH 7.5 million. He was unable to confirm them during a full check.

Based on the substantiated conclusions of the NAPC, law enforcement officers initiated criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 366-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (declaration of false information).
