The new sanctions are related to the fourth anniversary of the falsified presidential elections in Belarus.
The sanctions concern three groups of people:
- two deputy heads of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption; prosecutors and judges who handed down politically motivated sentences; a group of Lukashenko's associates, including the director general of the BelTA news agency Irina Akulovich, TV presenter Nikita Rachilovsky, and the former head of Lukashenko's press service Dmitry Zhuk.
In total, the EU's restrictive measures against Belarus now apply to 261 individuals and 37 organizations.
The individuals on the lists are subject to asset freezing, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with access to funds. Individuals are also subject to travel bans, preventing them from entering or transiting through the EU.
