Japanese shares plunge 4% on trade turmoil

The trade war between China and the United States is rocking Asia-Pacific markets, where sentiment remains mixed after a fresh round of sell-offs on Wall Street, CNBC reports.

Market Movements

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 4.19%, while the Topix lost 3.98%. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.32%. South Korea had mixed results, with the Kospi falling 0.92%, while the Kosdaq added 1.51%. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng rose 0.56%, while China's CSI 300 slipped 0.1%. Taiwan's Taiex was an exception, rising 2%.

Shadow of Negotiations

Analysts at ANZ said: “The extension does not reduce uncertainty. There is scepticism about the outcome of trade talks and this will continue to weigh on investment and therefore growth prospects.” Trump's 90-day tariff deferral has done little to reassure investors fearing a protracted conflict.
