How Chernobyl toads were able to survive in radiation conditions: research data from scientists (photo)

However, some species, in particular eastern tree frogs, have found a way to adapt. Researchers have discovered that these frogs have changed their skin color to a darker color to survive the increased radiation levels.

Oriental tree frogs, which are usually bright green in color, were found with black skin by researchers in the Chernobyl zone alienation. Further research showed that these frogs had significantly darker skin color compared to those living outside the zone.

Scientists suggested that dark skin color may serve as protection against radiation because melanin, a pigment that responsible for dark skin, may protect against ionizing radiation.

Notably, the frogs' skin color was darker in areas closest to the explosion site and in areas with high levels of radiation at the time of the accident. This suggests that high levels of ionizing radiation may have contributed to the selection of darker coloration in frogs living in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
