Why do Catholics sit during services and Orthodox Christians stand: the main differences

The answer to this question is not as simple as it seems.

This information was reported by Radiotrek, URA-Inform reports.

It is worth noting that before the 6th century, Orthodox Christians were not forced to pray standing. The process took place sitting, like Catholics. However, over time, monasteries began to practice a different format of service, which turned out to be the most severe.

Priests and monks began to conduct services exclusively while standing. Ordinary parishioners also took an example from them. As a result, this method of service was approved for all Orthodox Christians.

How does the church itself explain different service formats?

Orthodox Church

1. When a person stands, he seems to reach out to God. If he sits, he expects the Lord himself to come down to him, which is supposedly not very respectful.

2. Carrying out service on your feet is a kind of feat, because people have to give up comfort for the sake of serving God.

3. A person’s presence in conditions of convenience interferes with the reading of prayer.

Catholic Church

1. Being in comfort, you can completely relax and indulge in thoughts about the Almighty. It is inconvenient to read the prayer while standing; constantly shifting from one foot to the other is confusing.

2. To contact the Lord, the soul and brain are important; it is not necessary to reach up to him.

Despite such discrepancies, Catholics still stand up when they read the Gospel. In this way, they pay tribute to God.
