Why is the water in the Dead Sea so salty: scientists explain the mysterious phenomenon

The Dead Sea is actually a lake, meaning it is not connected to other seas, and is not part of the world's oceans.

This information was reported by IFLScience, reports URA-Inform.

It is one of the saltiest bodies of water on the planet among the existing seas and oceans. Due to the high salt content, the density of the water in the Dead Sea is so high that it is impossible to drown in it.

The consistency of the water is more like olive oil mixed with sand. Researchers have found that the reason for the high salinity of the Dead Sea is its geographical location.

Because it is fed by the Jordan River but has no outlet to the ocean, this means that water can only leave through evaporation, leaving behind minerals and salts. This process makes the lake increasingly saline, and today the Dead Sea is 9.7 times saltier than the ocean.

In addition, scientists believe that salinity has increased due to human activity, such as dams and water diversion for agriculture have resulted in less water flowing into the lake from the river than before. As a result, less fresh water dilutes the salt water of the Dead Sea.

Added to this is the region's warm climate, causing the water to evaporate quickly. Its level is falling at a rate of about 1.2 meters per year, respectively, the density of the water is constantly increasing

In such conditions, neither fish nor animals can exist, which is why the lake received the name «Dead&#187 ;. However, since the 30s it became known that it is not completely dead, since bacteria and some other types of microorganisms live in it.

Recall that it was previously reported, a one-way ticket: why people who go to Mars will never return to Earth.
