WHO conducted a study on the content of trans fats in Ukrainian products: the results were stunning

Representative of the World Health Organization in Ukraine Andrey Skipalsky said that Ukrainian product manufacturers massively do not comply with the law.

He noted that a third of businesses ignore the law on trans fats in food. According to Skipalsky, last year's WHO studies in Ukraine, conducted in October-December, indicate that 30% of processed Ukrainian products exceeded the content of trans fats, which are harmful to human health.

We are talking about baked goods, sausages, meat products, ice cream, as well as street food, cafe dishes and fast food outlets where evidence of excess trans fat content has been identified.

Skipalsky added that the products for the study were chosen empirically. Experts tested two categories of products: industrially produced food products, packaged and widely available in supermarket chains, and so-called street food, which is prepared in cafes or canteens. Among street food, we examined such popular products among the population as cakes, pizza, croissants and falafel.

«As part of an international study and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, we conducted a study of 120 types of food products, of which 37 do not meet the requirements of no more than 2 g of trans fats per 100 g of food. That is, 30% of the products studied exceeded the norm. Thus, a certain part of manufacturers does not comply with the new legal norm», — he noted.

He noted that  trans fats, or trans fatty acids, are hydrogenated fats that are an ingredient that allows manufacturers to make a product cheaper to produce and extend its shelf life. Scientists have proven that they increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases: strokes and heart attacks.
