Archaeologists claim to have found the place where the Last Supper of Jesus Christ took place with the apostles.

This information was reported by DailyMail, reports URA-Inform.

In their opinion, this could have happened in Jerusalem, in a house on Mount Zion. The building in which the Last Supper is believed to have taken place still exists. Researchers believe that the event took place in the upper room of a two-story house with limestone walls and a red sloped roof.

The site is depicted in several 4th-century works of art and is also briefly described in the Gospel of Luke (22:11-13). The building is located in the old city of Jerusalem on Mount Zion, above the southern gate. It has large columns supporting a vaulted ceiling and a red slanted roof.

In 1884, during the construction of a new church in Madaba, Jordan, an ancient map of Jerusalem, created in 560, was discovered. The map shows the main street of Cardo Maximus and two red-roofed sacred structures at the southern end.

In 2017, University of North Carolina adjunct professor of religious studies David Christian Clausen confirmed that the building, with its red slanted roof as in the paintings, remains in place. Scientists have examined a 6th-century drawing found in Italy in 1846 that depicts Jesus riding through the city's southern gate on a donkey with the building visible in the background.

Another depiction of this place was found on a sculpture from the 6th century. Here, Jesus stands in front of Mary Magdalene after his resurrection, and behind him is a building with a slanted roof.

The Israel Antiquities Authority decided to test this theory using laser technology and modern photographs to remove all the new elements of the building. The researchers carefully mapped every corner of the room to create accurate models of the space. The resulting images showed the Lamb of God and Lion of Judah symbols on the ceiling.

&#171 ;From time to time, when we have the opportunity, we continue to document other parts of the sacred complex. I hope that perhaps in the future we will still have the opportunity to conduct small classical archaeological studies», — said archaeologist Amit Reem.
