How many Ukrainians speak their native language at home: survey results

According to sociological data According to a survey conducted by the sociological service of the Razumkov Center, over the past 10 years the number of Ukrainians who communicate at home in their native language has grown almost one and a half times.

At the same time, 70% of citizens speak it fluently. Thus, 70.5% of respondents speak Ukrainian at home. For comparison, in 2015 there were 50% of such citizens, in 2006 – 46%. 11% of respondents communicate primarily in Russian at home (in 2015 this was 24%, in 2006 – 38%). 18% of citizens speak both Ukrainian and Russian.

According to the survey, 69.5% of respondents, assessing their level of proficiency in the Ukrainian language, answered that they speak it fluently, 27% – that they the level of proficiency in Ukrainian is sufficient for everyday communication, but it is difficult for them to speak it on special topics, 2% – that they do not understand the Ukrainian language well, it is a problem for them to communicate in it, 0.5% – that do not understand the Ukrainian language at all.

78% of respondents named Ukrainian as their native language (in 2017 this was 68%, in 2015 – 60%, in 2006 – 52%). 13% of respondents responded that both Ukrainian and Russian are equally native to them. The share of those who called Russian their native language is 6% (in 2006 there were 31%, in 2015 – 15%).
