Which countries have the highest death toll from COVID-19: WHO data

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 704 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide, amounting to about 11% of the world population.

The death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed 7 million, with more than half of all deaths occurring in 10 countries, it said. The first signs of the coronavirus appeared in November in China, but the COVID-19 outbreak began in December 2019. The first confirmed death was recorded in Wuhan on January 9, 2020.

The coronavirus quickly spread to Japan and Korea, and the first case of COVID-19 in Europe was confirmed on January 21 in France. Subsequently, almost every country in the world reported infections and first deaths. On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, and on March 11, it declared the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nearly five years into the COVID-19 pandemic, the death toll has exceeded 7 million. The United States has recorded the highest number of deaths, with 1.2 million, making it the only country with over a million COVID-19 fatalities. Brazil is second with 711,000 deaths, and India is third with 533,000 deaths.

The ranking of countries by the number of deaths from coronavirus is as follows:

1. USA – 1.2 million

2. Brazil – 711 thousand

3. India – 533 thousand

4. Russia – 402 thousand

5. Mexico – 334 thousand

6. Great Britain – 232 thousand

7. Peru – 222 thousand

8. Italy – 196 thousand

9. Germany – 183 thousand

10. France – 167 thousand

These 10 countries account for 59% of all deaths associated with coronavirus, which is equivalent to 4.18 million deaths.

In Ukraine, the first case of coronavirus was recorded on March 3 in Chernivtsi. The first death from COVID-19 in Ukraine was reported on March 13 – a 71-year-old woman from the Zhytomyr region died. According to WHO, 5.5 million cases of coronavirus infection were registered in Ukraine in 2024. In terms of the number of deaths from COVID-19, Ukraine ranks 17th in the world with more than 112 thousand deaths.
