Zhytomyr Mayor Sergei Sukhomlin reported that since September the city six-day schooling will be introduced in the new school year.
According to the official, a decision on six-day schooling is currently being prepared. This will help extend the holidays in the event of long power outages in winter, avoiding the transition to online learning.
“We need to create a reserve in these few months so as not to switch to distance learning. It is impossible to teach children online, as the quality of education suffers. We plan for children to go to school on Saturdays as well. This way, we will accumulate additional days and monitor the situation during the winter. If a critical situation arises and large-scale power outages continue, we will be able to extend the holidays for a month or a month and a half, or two weeks, for example. And in the spring, when we see how the winter has gone, there will no longer be a need to study on Saturdays,” — noted Sukhomlin.
The head of Zhitomir also emphasized that consultations with general education institutions are currently ongoing, after which the decision on six-day schooling will be announced.
