Experts expressed concerns about the likelihood of a new blackout in Ukraine, arguing that it is too optimistic to rule out such a possibility.
On the air of the program “Bolshoy Lvov Speaks”, the head of security programs at the Center for Globalistics “Strategy XXI” Pavel Lakiychuk explained that the threat remains real, based on the experience of the previous blackout in 2022-2023. The expert's findings are reported by URA-Inform.
Lakiychuk recalled that during that crisis, the Russian military used the tactic of striking the distribution networks and substations surrounding Ukraine's nuclear power plants for the first time. This allowed them to cause the shutdown of nuclear power plants' generation without having to attack the reactors themselves.
“When they strike substations, the nuclear power plant has nowhere to transfer its generated energy, and the automatics turn off generation, the protection systems are triggered,” he explained.
The expert also noted that since the spring of 2023, Russian strikes have focused on thermal and hydroelectric power plants, as well as balancing generation. This, according to him, is actually preparation for a new massive blackout, since without balanced generation it is difficult to manage energy capacities under heavy load conditions.
Despite these threats, Lakiychuk emphasized that Ukraine's air defense system has been significantly strengthened since 2022. However, the country's energy infrastructure is still under serious threat, and it is too early to talk about the absence of risks of power outages.
We also remind you that Ukrainians need to prepare for the cold: energy experts have suggested how not to become a victim of frost.
