Sparrows have disappeared in Kyiv: what is the reason and why is the situation threatening a catastrophe

Environmentalists are sounding the alarm: In 2024, there were almost no common sparrows left in Kyiv. Their population fell 50 times or even more in just one year.

This information was reported by the Kiev Ecological and Cultural Center, which quotes ” URA-Inform».

Experts see the problem in the fact that city authorities are “glamorizing” city parks by cutting down old hollow trees that serve as “high-rise buildings” for birds. And the consequence could be the extermination of the birds themselves parks by pests.

The Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center spoke about the global problem of the capital's ecosystem. They say that sparrows have practically disappeared from the capital, and their number, according to experts, has fallen by 50 or more times. It is noted that there are two reasons why the birds left the capital's ecosystem.

“The first is the glamorization of Kyiv parks, when old hollow trees are cut down, and sparrows have nowhere to nest. The second is the harmful systematic mowing of grass. In fact, what “Kievzelenstroy” and housing offices are doing in Kyiv with the help of haymaking is real ecocide,” the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center said.

In the tall grass, ecologists explain, live insects that birds feed on. And especially their flight paths, small sparrows that are just learning to fly. They usually feed on insects that live in lawns: due to systematic mowing (and often “shaving” their heads, the KEC jokes), the insects have almost disappeared.

“Without these birds, pests will destroy parks and gardens. No sparrows, which means a real paradise for the chestnut moth, which destroys trees and bushes. After all, it is because of it that red spots appear on the leaves,” the KEC ecologists note.

It was also previously reported that Kyiv was again covered in dirty air: the part of the city with the worst indicator was named.
