Treasures from Atlantis: Sunken Ship with Unique Cargo to Be Raised to Surface

Scientists plan to raise surface of an ancient ship that sank 1,500 years ago off the coast of Sicily.

This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Heritage Daily.

This ship, known as the « Hellas II, sank in the 5th century with a rare cargo of orichalcum, a rare precious metal alloy valued in antiquity almost as highly as gold.

The ship, found at a depth of over 300 meters, is reported to be in a surprisingly in good condition, which allows us to extract important data on the maritime trade and shipbuilding of ancient Greek civilizations.

It is noted that during previous excavations in 2015, 39 orichalcum ingots were discovered, and in 2017, another 47. This rare alloy, known as “mountain copper” from ancient Greek, mentioned in the texts of Plato, where it is associated with the myths of Atlantis and the Temple of Poseidon.

In addition to orichalcum, Corinthian helmets, amphorae and personal belongings of the crew were found on board the ship. The operation to raise the ship is coordinated by the Marine the Sicilian administration, which collaborates with local organizations and receives funding of 500,000 euros.
