It is reported that this 40 healthy people over 50 years of age took part in the study.

This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Рlos.

During the study, the participants underwent various tests assessing muscle strength, balance and gait. It turned out that the ability to stand on one leg, especially on the non-dominant one, decreased in all participants with age.

At the same time, muscle strength and gait parameters changed less significantly. Scientists from the Mayo Clinic came to the conclusion that that a person's ability to maintain balance is a more accurate indicator of aging than muscle strength or gait.

The study's authors explain this by the fact that maintaining balance requires using not only muscles, but also the visual organs, vestibular system, and nervous system . Over time, these systems become less efficient, which leads to a deterioration in balance.

Fortunately, balance can be trained. Scientists recommend incorporating balance-improving exercises into your daily routine. For example, you can stand on one leg, do exercises on a balance board, or do yoga.

Loss of balance significantly increases the risk of falls, especially in older people. Falls can lead to serious injuries, fractures, and even disability. Therefore, maintaining balance is one of the key factors for maintaining quality of life in old age.

Recall that earlier it was reported that porridge can slow down aging: doctors said what to include in the diet.
