Russia has lost one of their Arctic islands.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Charter97.
We are talking about Mesyatsev Island, located in the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
It is noted that it completely disappeared due to the effects of global warming. Thus, as of August 19, 2015, its area was approximately 53 hectares, but over time the size of the island has been steadily shrinking.
After almost nine years, only a small ice patch of about 3 hectares remained, which completely disappeared in September.
“In discussing the reasons for the island's disappearance, the group put forward the following hypothesis : In Arctic regions, global warming is causing glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise. This causes erosion of the coastline and, as a consequence, the disappearance of some landforms,” the Russian Geographical Society reported.
Recall that earlier it was reported that the Russian Federation captured the most territories since the beginning of the year: Bloomberg assessed the strategic prospects of Ukraine.
