What could North Korean troops' participation in the war against Ukraine lead to: ISW assessment

Analysts of the American The Institute for the Study of War noted that on November 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his counterpart from the DPRK, Cho Son-Hui, in Moscow.

This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to ISW.

They discussed, in particular, the military support of the Russian Federation on the battlefield from the DPRK. At the same time, Cho noted that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un gave the order to support Russia's “holy war” against Ukraine to victory.

“Cho's reference to the concept of a “holy war” against Ukraine is notable, as the Russian Orthodox Church has used parallel language to rhetorically justify Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine as an existential and civilizational struggle – a struggle that North Korea has now willingly entered,” the Institute noted.

At the same time, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin believes that Russian troops will suffer massive losses on the battlefield in Ukraine. Thus, the DPRK troops may lose more than 1,200 people per day (or about 36 thousand per month). In addition, according to the latest US estimates, the Russian Federation is calling up 25,000 to 30,000 new soldiers per month. This indicates that the aggressor country cannot fully replenish the current losses on the front.

“The 8,000 North Korean troops reportedly preparing to enter the battle in the Kursk region thus represent about a week's worth of casualties along the entire front line. North Korea has sent a total of 12,000 troops to Russia,” — the ISW report says.

In addition, according to analysts, North Korea has allegedly decided to participate in the war against Ukraine in order to gain combat experience in modern warfare.

“If North Korean troops suffer the same losses as Russian troops, the battlefield lessons that Pyongyang hopes to learn will be nullified, and it is unlikely that Kim Jong-un will contribute to such battlefield losses indefinitely,” the experts concluded.

Recall that it was previously reported how events in Ukraine could develop after the US elections: the BBC named three scenarios.
