Twitter LinkedIn

With rising prices for energy resources and threats to energy infrastructure, many Ukrainians are turning to firewood as an affordable source of heat.

This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Aktualno.

It is important to know what types of wood not suitable for stoves and fireplaces, so that heating is safe and efficient.

What firewood is better not to use:

Processed firewood

Wood coated with varnish, paint or containing glue releases toxic substances when burning, which are harmful to breathing. Also avoid firewood with metal or plastic residue.

Resinous wood

Wood with a high resin content, such as poplar, willow, aspen, fir, linden, bird cherry and rowan trees, release creosote, a resinous substance that settles in chimneys and increases the risk of fire.

Raw wood

Under-dried or damp firewood reduces heating efficiency: more energy is required to evaporate moisture, which reduces heat output.

Recommended types of firewood:

Oak, ash, birch, maple, mahogany, as well as apple and pear. These species are characterized by high heat output and long burning. Be sure to use well-dried and prepared firewood for safe and effective heating.
