Effective protection of windows from blast waves: proven recommendations

During constant shelling and drone attacks, it is important not only to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones while in shelter, but also to take care of protecting your home, especially your windows.

This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Tsn.

Glass and frames are a common cause of blast injuries because they shatter into pieces when they are close to impact. Here are some ways to reduce the risk of injury.

Budget Solutions for Window Protection

1. Scotch tape or film

Sealing windows with wide tape in the shape of a cross is a popular method that prevents glass fragments from flying off. You can also use masking film, which is easier to remove. However, both methods only reduce the risk of injury from debris without strengthening the glass.

2. Barricades from improvised materials

Window sills can be tightly packed with books, pillows or furniture, which partially absorbs the shock wave. It is advisable to cover at least half the height of the window.

3. Plastic bottles of water

Residents of Kharkov have proposed an original method: tightly closed window sashes are fixed with 5-6-liter plastic bottles of water. They are placed on the window sill, with the exception of the area where the sash is attached to the frame. In the event of an explosion, the sash may open, but the glass will remain intact.

More reliable, but expensive methods

Armor film

Experts recommend using protective films that strengthen the glass and increase its resistance to impacts.

Important recommendations

Even if the windows are reinforced, you cannot hide under them. In the event of an explosion, the windows, especially the old type, fly out under the impact of the shock wave. If you are unable to take cover, you should lie down on the floor next to the explosion, covering your head with a pillow, blanket or clothing.

Remember: none of the methods guarantees complete protection, but using several of them at the same time helps to significantly reduce the risks.

Military expert Oleg Zhdanov emphasizes that closed windows most often cannot withstand the shock wave during an explosion and are knocked out, especially if they are old window structures.

Windows that are wide open, unlike closed ones, can keep the glass intact, since the shock wave affects only the end of the frame. However, in this case, the wave penetrates the room, destroying everything around: furniture, chandeliers, glass display cases and objects on the tables.

To minimize the risk of fragments, Zhdanov recommends sealing the glass with tape crosswise. This creates a triplex effect – when the glass cracks, but remains glued to the film, without flying apart into dangerous fragments. This method reduces the risk of injury to people in the room, although it will not completely protect against window destruction.

It will also be interesting to learn how to easily get rid of a stump on the site: an effective method has been named.
