Ukraine is planning a high school reform that will reduce the list of compulsory subjects, including physics, chemistry, and biology.

This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Radiotrek.

According to the Ministry of Education, the changes will come into effect in 2027, and a pilot project will start in 2025 in some lyceums.

The idea of the reform is to give high school students more freedom in choosing subjects that match their interests and future career plans. To do this, the Ministry of Education is reducing the list of compulsory subjects.

“Everything related to the study of the Ukrainian language and literature, the history of Ukraine, English and mathematics, physical education and the “Defense of Ukraine” will remain. Every citizen should know this at the proper level,” the statement says.

Instead, students will be able to choose one of the subjects: art, technology, computer science or financial literacy. Among the subjects that will no longer be mandatory are foreign literature, world history, civic education, biology/ecology, geography, physics and chemistry.

To ensure the comprehensive development of schoolchildren, the ministry will offer a system of individual selection of subjects. This will allow students to form their educational profile, while maintaining the opportunity to study subjects of interest to them outside of it. How effective this approach will be will become clear after the first results of the pilot project.

And also, new “passports” will be introduced in Ukraine: they will differ by region.
