Why are airplane windows always rounded?

Experienced pilot and popular TikTok blogger “Captain Steve” explained why airplane windows are always round.

This was reported by “URA-Inform” with reference to Unian.

According to him, about 70 years ago, airplanes were equipped with square windows, like in ordinary buildings. However, with the increase in flight speed and altitude, accompanied by significant pressure drops, it became clear that this shape is not suitable.

The square windows were vulnerable because of the weakness in the corners, which concentrated the load and caused severe damage to the aircraft structure. These deficiencies caused tragic accidents.

«They lost several planes in the air. The planes literally fell apart because the square windows developed small cracks right at the edges, and if enough of these hairline cracks formed due to the stress on the airframe from the pressure, the airframe would actually fall apart», — “Captain Steve” explained.

As a result, engineers came to the conclusion that round or oval windows distribute pressure evenly, eliminating weak points, and are a safer solution.

“They are stronger and do not crack, and since then we have never had a problem,” said the aviation veteran.
