Ireland
The country's authorities are offering grants of up to $90,000 to those who want to renovate an abandoned house on one of the picturesque coastal islands.
“The 30 islands have a combined population of just around 3,000. Ireland is looking to regenerate the area and make it aspirational by attracting young people, particularly so-called 'digital nomads' who work remotely for international companies,” says Wayne Mills, an international relocation specialist.
To participate in the program, you must live in a renovated home for at least 10 years. The government, in turn, promises to improve transport links, internet coverage and the quality of health services.
Switzerland
In the Alpine village of Albinen, people under 45 are being offered $23,000 to move there, plus an additional $11,500 for each child. However, they will have to live there for at least 10 years and go through a strict citizenship procedure.
Spain
People are being offered $3,200 to move to northern Italy – plus the same amount for each small child.
“Ponga is in one of the northernmost regions of the country – it's far from the main tourist routes, but its mountainous landscape is stunning. It's the perfect place to live in harmony with nature, and they produce amazing wines!” Mills adds.
Greece
On the picturesque island of Antikythera, authorities are paying people more than $500 a month for three years to visit.
“There are only 45 permanent residents on Antikythera at the moment, so it's a quiet, close-knit community. They're keen to add more young families to the island to help liven it up,” — explains Wayne.
Italy
