Minister of Foreign Affairs Hungary's Peter Szijjarto said that after the US presidential elections, the end of the war in Ukraine has never seemed so close.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Hírado.
According to the ministry, after consulting with the appointed US national security adviser Mike Waltz, Szijjarto said that the appointment of a representative to this position would be good news for Hungary, since he is not only a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, but also a member of the Hungarian Friendship Section, which also participates in Congress.
He explained that they had a friendly conversation on bilateral relations and geopolitical issues, including the war in Ukraine, which is also a major concern for US politicians.
“Isn't it a coincidence that in the American presidential election campaign, the war, whether to end it or continue it, was one of the most important issues, and while Donald Trump was clearly saying that he wants to end the war, Kamala Harris was saying that he wants to continue the war,” he said.
Szijjártó noted that there is a double situation, since on the one hand there has never been such a good chance of ending the war in Ukraine quickly after the US presidential elections, and on the other hand there is now a greater risk of escalation than ever before.
The latter reason, he said, is that the current administration in Washington is “trying to create a situation in which it will be difficult to establish peace after January 20, especially quickly.”
“We are working hard to make Donald Trump's goal of ending this war a reality,” – he said, warning that otherwise the risk of escalation would grow with each passing day, and calling it extremely important to keep the channels of communication open.
Szijjártó noted that the fact that “American Republicans and we, Hungarian patriots, think alike, and in some cases even exactly alike, about the most important things in the world and world politics, provides a very stable basis for the system of bilateral relations,” which will certainly enter a new dimension in the future.
“Therefore, there is nothing left to do but believe that nothing will happen in Ukraine before January 20 that will irreversibly change the situation from the point of view that after January 20, making peace and creating peace will be much more difficult than it looks now,” — he said.
It also became known that NATO began to consider scenarios for ending the war in Ukraine: details from Bloomberg.
