Bill Gates called a simple childhood habit that helped him become a billionaire.

Bill Gates isn't sure he would have become a billionaire if he had grown up like today's kids, who spend a lot of time on gadgets and social media. The co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft says he would never have built the company he is today if he hadn't spent time exploring the outside world, reading, and thinking.
He spent his childhood playing games that inspire creative thinking. He notes that attention span is like a muscle, so constant interruptions and social media addiction make it incredibly difficult to develop.
“When I was feeling restless or bored – or getting into trouble for misbehaving – I would disappear into my room and immerse myself in books or ideas, often for hours at a time. This ability to turn downtime into deep thinking and learning became a fundamental part of who I am. It was also critical to my success later in life,” Gates said.
Throughout his career, the former Microsoft executive has often attributed his success to his voracious reading habits and ability to isolate himself. Without the ability to focus intensely and follow an idea wherever it leads, he says, the world might be without the breakthroughs that come from focusing on something and sticking with it, even when distracted.
“My childhood was marked by an amazing freedom — something that might surprise people who assume I spent all day indoors at a computer. I hiked trails that would terrify today’s parents, explored endlessly with my neighborhood friends, and ran around Washington, D.C. My parents didn’t know where I was half the time, and that was fine then. These activities taught me resilience, independence, and judgment in a way that no controlled, structured activity could replicate,” Gates wrote.
