Storage waste heaps are artificial embankments that arose as a result of mining activities, although they sometimes have more interesting stories.

This was reported by URA-Inform.

It is known that they are not only geographical, but and cultural feature of industrial regions of Ukraine, such as Donbass. However, despite their prevalence in these areas, waste heaps are absent from other regions of the country. The reason for this lies in geological and economic factors.

Mining activity accompanied by the formation of waste heaps , is carried out only in places with large deposits of coal and other minerals.

For example, in the western and central regions of Ukraine, agriculture and processing industry predominate, which does not require the formation of such embankments. Moreover, the historical development of these regions focused on other types of economic activity, which eliminates the need for intensive mining.

In addition, waste heaps require a specific approach to environmental protection. They can become a source of harmful emissions and fires if the technologies for their operation are not followed.

In some cases, such embankments become fire sites due to coal residues, which poses a danger to the population and the ecosystem.
