Mayor of a small Antonio Torchia, the mayor of the Italian town of Belcastro in Calabria, issued an unusual decree prohibiting residents from getting sick.
URA-Inform reports this with reference to CNN.
He noted that this unconventional step was caused by an acute shortage of medical services in the village, where about 1,300 people live, half of whom are elderly. According to the text of the decree, city residents are advised to avoid any situations that could lead to illnesses or injuries requiring emergency care. Among the advice is to leave the house less often, refrain from traveling, reduce physical activity and devote more time to rest.
However, Torchia emphasized that his initiative is not only a playful provocation, but also an attempt to draw attention to a serious health problem in the region.
«There is a medical center in the city, but it is often closed, and doctors cannot be found on weekends and holidays. The only nearby emergency aid point is in Catanzaro, 45 kilometers from Belcastro, which puts the lives and health of residents at risk in the event of an emergency,” he noted.
The mayor said that his decree is a cry for help and a call for regional authorities to immediately intervene and solve the problem. The document will remain in force until the local medical center begins to function stably and fully.
