According to the latest decision of the German authorities, temporary protection under §24 AufenthG has been extended until March 2026. However, this status remains dependent on the general situation in Ukraine: in the event of a ceasefire or a significant improvement in conditions, a review and changes in the residence status of Ukrainian refugees are possible.

Germany has extended temporary protection under §24 AufenthG until March 2026. However, if there is a ceasefire or the situation improves, the status of Ukrainian refugees may be reviewed.
1. Possible scenarios
Voluntary return with support
If Germany recognizes Ukraine as safe, they may offer:
- Payment for travel (air tickets, train tickets, buses).
- Financial assistance for the first time.
- Consultations on return.
In 2017, Starthilfe Plus paid out up to 1,200 euros per person.
Forced deportation unlikely
Even with a ceasefire, automatic termination of protection is not possible. The authorities assess:
- The socio-economic situation in Ukraine
- Security of specific regions
- Personal circumstances of refugees
For example, after the conflict in Kosovo in 1999, refugees were given years to adapt.
2. How to stay in Germany?
Those wishing to stay can change their status:
- Work visa (§18a, §18b AufenthG) – for qualified specialists.
- Business (§21 AufenthG) – the possibility of self-employment.
- Study (§16a AufenthG) – student visa.
- Humanitarian residence permit (§25 AufenthG) – if return is not possible.
- Family reunification (§28 AufenthG) – if relatives are already in Germany.
- Permanent residence (§9 AufenthG) – after 5 years of residence.
Summary
Extending protection until 2026 gives time to adapt. Those who want to stay should apply for alternative status in advance.
