South Korean scientists have created an “eternal” nuclear battery: what is its secret?

The new technology promises to replace traditional lithium-ion batteries, which have a limited lifespan and whose efficiency declines over time.

The battery is based on a beta voltaic method, which converts the energy released by beta particles into electricity. The isotope used as a radiation source is carbon-14, known as radiocarbon. It emits only beta radiation, which is harmless if properly isolated, and has an extremely long half-life.

“Radiocarbon is not only an efficient but also a stable energy source,” the developers note.

According to them, a battery based on it can be used in devices where reliability and autonomy are critical: drones, sensors, medical implants and spacecraft.

The ecological component of the technology is separately emphasized. Radiocarbon is a by-product of nuclear reactions, and its use allows waste to be utilized with benefit. Due to the slow decay and availability of the material, the new battery can become a safe and durable energy source of the future.
