Ukraine initiates convening of the UN Security Council due to the latest massive shelling of the Russian Federation

Ukraine, with 30 UN member states, initiated the convening of an emergency meeting of the Security Council in connection with Russia’s massive shelling of Ukrainian cities on the night of Friday, December 29.

Details: Together with three dozen states, Ukraine appealed to the Ecuadorian presidency of the UN Security Council “with a request to convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the Russian missile and drone attack, which led to a large number of civilian casualties and destruction of civilian infrastructure.”

On the night of December 29, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine. Kyiv, Kharkov, Dnepr, Odessa, Lvov, Zaporozhye and other cities were under attack. According to the latest data, at least 30 people were killed and more than 160 were injured.

The shelling was condemned by a number of European countries. The UK has announced the dispatch of “hundreds of anti-aircraft missiles ” for British air defense systems.

US President Joe Biden, commenting on the massive Russian shelling of Ukraine, emphasized the need for Congress to approve additional assistance for Kiev as quickly as possible.

Against this background, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba discussed with top EU diplomat Josep Borrell the supply of air defense systems to Ukraine and military priorities for 2024.
