US rejects Putin's ceasefire proposal in Ukraine – Reuters

<p>Russian President Putin made a proposal about a ceasefire in Ukraine to freeze the war, but the United States rejected it after contacts between mediators.</p>

<p>A second Russian source said that the Americans through intermediaries told Moscow that they would not discuss a possible ceasefire without the participation of Ukraine, so the contacts ended in failure.</p>
<p>A third source said that the Americans did not want to put pressure on Ukraine.</p>
<p>The Russians say that mediators met in Turkey at the end of 2023.</p>
<p>Putin’s proposal was allegedly conveyed to Washington, where senior officials met US officials, including White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, CIA Director Bill Burns and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.</p>
<p>Sullivan was expected to speak with Putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov and lay out next steps. But in January, Sullivan told Ushakov that Washington was ready to talk about other aspects of the relationship, but would not talk about a ceasefire without Ukraine.</p>
