The European Commission and the European Parliament have tentatively agreed to extend the removal of duties and restrictions for another year.
Ukraine will be able to export agricultural products2 to the EU for 2 years. The European Commission and the European Parliament have previously approved the extension of the period of validity of the norms that abolish quotas and duties for our state.
As stated in the message on the European Parliament website, this is being done in order to support Ukraine during the aggressive war unleashed by Russia.
The end date of the previous trade liberalization regime was June 5, 2024. The EU proposes to extend these measures for exactly 12 months. The final vote will be held later.
MEPs took into account the situation with protests by farmers in EU member states, so the document will contain a number of reservations. If Ukrainian products lead to serious changes in the market of the European Union or individual states, the European Commission reserves the right to resort to restrictive measures. The time for their discussion and implementation was reduced from 3 to 2 weeks. As for Ukrainian wheat, regulators will ensure that export volumes do not exceed the average of the previous two years, 2022 and 2023.
- The European Commission has already met the protesting farmers halfway: they were promised a reduction in administrative burdens and the abolition of certain penalties.
